Removable Braces

Removable braces, as the names suggests, aren’t fixed permanently onto teeth during treatment. They can be removed for activities such as sport. Removable braces are made of a plastic plate with wires which allow the teeth to move by applying gentle pressure.

Your orthodontist may use removable braces if there are minor corrections to be made.

Suitability of removable braces

As with fixed braces, removable braces can be suitable for patients of all ages. Your orthodontist will assess the treatment required and will see if removable braces are the best course of treatment for you. Removable braces are generally used on the top jaw.

Treatment benefits of removable braces

Throughout your treatment you’ll see your teeth becoming straighter. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean, and may therefore reduce the risk of gum disease and improve your general oral hygiene.

Unlike fixed braces, removable braces can be taken out of the mouth for cleaning, flossing and for sport as necessary.

Length of removable brace treatment

As with fixed braces the treatment time varies according to the complexity of the tooth movements. During your first appointment you’ll be told the estimated treatment time.

Once your removable brace treatment is completed, you’ll need to wear clear plastic retainers to ensure that your teeth stay in the desired position. Sometimes it is advised to wear the plastic retainers full-time to ensure that the teeth stay fixed in position.

Removable brace treatment experience

Removable brace treatment shouldn’t be painful but you may find that after adjustments and tightening, it’s a little uncomfortable. However, this will only be for a short time and discomfort can be reduced with mild over-the-counter painkillers.

Achieving the best results from your removable braces

To see great results, it is vital that you follow all advice given by your orthodontist, keep all booked appointments and maintain a good level of oral hygiene.

Looking after your removable brace

Removable braces can be removed for activities that could damage them, such as sport. But your brace is still delicate and it’s advised that you avoid hard, sticky or sweet food and drink to prevent damage.

To ensure your gums stay healthy throughout your treatment, it is important you regularly clean your brace with a separate toothbrush after every meal time, with water and toothpaste.
